Cutting out carbohydrates entirely from your diet is not generally considered a healthy approach for most people. Carbs are one of three macronutrients, along with protein and fat. They play a dominant role in providing energy for the body, in particular the brain and the muscles.
There are certain situations where reducing your carb intake can be beneficial, but as a whole, it isn’t recommended.
Carbohydrates are an Energy Source
Carbs are the body’s main source of energy. This is because they provide glucose, which is used by the brain and muscles for fuel. Without a substantial amount of carbs, your body might begin to lack the energy it needs to perform daily activities and maintain bodily functions.
Missing Out on Key Nutrients
Many carb-heavy foods are rich in essential vitamins and minerals, yet people still believe that all carbs are bad. Some carbs are better than others and can provide value by bringing critical nutrients into the body such as fibre, minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. Cutting out carbohydrates can lead to nutrient deficiencies if you do not replace the carb with a different nutritious food.
Carbs are Good for Your Brain
As previously mentioned, carbs are your brain’s preferred source of energy. When you first begin reducing your carb intake, you could experience symptoms like brain fog, mental fatigue and mood swings because your brain’s favourite energy source has disappeared. Over time, those symptoms will ease. Bear in mind that low-carb diets are difficult to stick to because of this.
Carbs Affect Fitness
Are you a fitness fanatic? If you are, the low-carb diet will not work in your favour. A lack of carbs in your diet can make your fitness gains plateau. Carbs provide your body with quick energy, and during a workout, your body uses them to give you enough energy to complete it. If you feel your performance in the gym has plateaued, you might not have enough energy from carbohydrates.
Rather than cutting out carbohydrates entirely, we recommend focusing on the consumption of complex carbs from whole, unprocessed sources such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes. These foods provide valuable nutrients and contribute to a balanced diet that supports overall health and well-being. Consult a professional to come up with a plan that supports your needs and goals.
